# Connect your platform

Start here to bring CARTO into the AI platform you already use. Each guide covers how to set CARTO up in that platform — usually the [CARTO MCP Server](/carto-for-agents/mcp-server.md), and for coding agents also the [Agent Skills](/carto-for-agents/agent-skills.md) and the [CARTO CLI](/carto-for-agents/cli.md) where they add value.

Before you start, get your **MCP Server URL** from CARTO Workspace under **Developers > Workflow API & MCP Server**, and decide [how to authenticate](/carto-for-agents/mcp-server.md#choose-how-to-authenticate) — OAuth for the full tool surface, or an API Access Token for read-and-discovery work.

## Chat and enterprise assistants

Connect over the MCP Server and work with CARTO in the conversation.

## Coding agents

Connect over the MCP Server, and add the Agent Skills and CLI so the agent drives CARTO idiomatically and can script, automate, and administer.

## What you can set up in each platform

| Surface | What it gives the platform | Where |
| ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------ |
| [CARTO MCP Server](/carto-for-agents/mcp-server.md) | In-conversation tools: explore data, create and edit maps, build and run Workflows, admin. Works in every platform above. | All platforms |
| [CARTO Agent Skills](/carto-for-agents/agent-skills.md) | Playbooks that teach coding agents the right CARTO patterns. | Coding agents |
| [CARTO CLI](/carto-for-agents/cli.md) | Scripting, CI/CD, headless and bulk work, and deeper administration and auditing. | Coding agents, terminals |

## Which platforms render maps inline?

CARTO's map tools render an interactive map directly in the chat only on platforms that support [MCP Apps](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/extensions/apps/overview#client-support) — **Claude.ai, ChatGPT, and Claude Desktop** today. On other platforms the agent still creates the map and returns its URL; open it in CARTO to view it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.carto.com/carto-for-agents/connect-your-platform.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
